The Best American-Made Hoodies

Ahh—the hoodie. Is there anything quite as inviting as a hoodie fresh out of the dryer on a crisp fall night? Curling up on the couch in your SO’s oversized college sweatshirt to watch some trashy TV on Netflix? Throwing it on under a leather jacket and strutting around with a latte on a brisk fall afternoon on your way to brunch, or shopping, or… Literally just about anything? The applications are endless.

Here at A to Z, we’re hard-pressed to find something more inviting and familiar than the wardrobe workhorse that is the hoodie. Perhaps the only way to make a hoodie more appealing is to add the knowledge that what you’re getting is a quality, economy-boosting, genuine made-in-the-USA product. While most of the products on this list are marketed directly toward men, I think most would agree that it doesn’t matter whether you’re a man or a woman, (or anything in between) a quality hoodie is an important part of anybody’s closet. That being said, we’ve done our best to include as many options for women as possible.

So, without further ado, below we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 hoodies made right here in the USA.

5. BLDWN

As with many of the products in this list, USA born and manufactured clothing inevitably tends to be on the pricier side. Labor isn’t cheap in the states, after all. But the quality and peace of mind you can be assured you’ll get with a true American original like BLDWN is sure to be worth the slightly heightened price tag.

Founded by designers Matt and Emily Baldwin in Kansas city in 2008, the Baldwins have been taking their time to do things right for over a decade. They make the list for their tireless commitment to design that never sacrifices quality. To paraphrase their own tagline, this will be the first hoodie you pack and the last one you throw away.

4. American Giant

American Giant is somewhat unique on this list because they really strive to find a sweet spot between the premium price tag many of these companies command, while still providing compelling design, and quality materials. Founded in 2012 by Bayard Winthrop in San Francisco with the express purpose of providing reasonably priced high-quality American-made clothing, the company has garnered a lot of attention with their approach. In fact, they actually launched their brand with a hoodie designed by former Apple industrial engineer, Philipe Manoux. Suffice it to say it’d basically be impossible to not have them on this list. And hey, they have a women’s version of the “best hoodie ever” as well!

3. Buck Mason

Started in 2013 by Sasha Koen and Erik Allen, Buck Mason has been making a name for themselves as one of the most exciting new brands specializing in men’s modern classics. They spend their time focusing on USA born design and manufacturing. In fact they work with a local family factory in their native Venice, California, stressing the importance of keeping their operation close at hand, and under their watchful eyes. According to their home page each design is a riff on an American classic, and their classic brushed loopback hooded sweatshirt (Hoodie, for short) is no exception when it comes to that formula.

2. Topo Design

Topo Design is an outdoor apparel and gear company that really kicks the design aspect into the next century. Their stuff is just cool. Topo Design occupies a compelling space in the outdoor apparel market, mixing elements common in the really traditional American outdoor design houses and adding something new and fresh. Headquartered in Denver, Topo Design successfully marries high-performance ultra-durable gear, attractive styling, and prices that won’t completely break the bank. And everything is made in-house right in Denver! I personally love their stuff, and can’t recommend taking a look enough if you’re looking for unique, USA born and manufactured outdoor goods–as well as a super sick looking hoodie as well, of course.

Puffer Hoodie (Women’s): $179.00 ***

***I know the women’s option isn’t a traditional fleece hoodie, but we wanted to include something on the women’s apparel side—strictly because Topo’s stuff is so cool. This option is more of an alpinist/cold weather technical hoodie, but hey—a hoodie is a hoodie!

1. (Tied for first) Reformation

I think so much could be written about this brand, and while they don’t solely produce in the USA they are just about one of the most transparent and ethically conscious brands in fashion at the moment. Check out their about us page for more information on the litany of things they do to strive to better the world. That being said, this one is strictly for the ladies (or however you choose to identify)! Chances are, you have probably heard of Reformation, but if not I’ll do my best not to butcher the mission of this beloved and innovative eco-friendly-ethics-first fashion house. I’d wager to say, and I don’t mean to disparage any of the great companies on this list, that Reformation is the most design forward company on this list. Their design mission, for instance, is: “to make effortless silhouettes that celebrate the feminine figure”. Simply put the entire design process at Reformation is obsessive, and it’s obsessive in the best ways.

Founded in 2009 by Yael Aflalo, Reformation strives for almost complete sustainability, from the selection of their raw fabrics to the manufacturing process itself, to a carbon neutrality plan, they truly live their mission statement. And they do all this while still managing to provide unique and timelessly beautiful pieces that are consistently graceful and impactful no matter the season. While that might all sound like some heady talk especially when we’re considering a hoodie, just remember to stop and think that when you buy from a company like Reformation, no matter the piece you end up buying, it’s that kind of obsessive quality and dedication to sustainability that you’re supporting.

Oh and I forgot to mention it’s a steal on this list at just 78 dollars!

1. (Tied for first) Filson

Well, this is definitely one of the big boys in terms of American designed and manufactured outdoor goods and apparel. They’ve been doing it since 1897 when a prospector named Clinton C. Filson decided to move west to try his hand at outfitting the loggers in Seattle, Washington. It remained a family run company until 1970, and while there have been some changes in recent years one thing remains true. This company sells quality goods. They just have that premium feel, and they’ve been delighting both professionals and hobbyists for generations. You can check out their blog here it’s full of beautiful pictures and compelling stories of people doing rad stuff with Filson gear on.

In all seriousness, if you want to get out there, (or hey, if you want to stay in and watch a movie, I won’t judge) and you want to be comforted by a hoodie with well over a hundred years of proud, rugged, American manufacturing heritage imbued right into the fabric and stitching, and the…well, even the damn drawstrings on the hood; Filson’s C.C.F. Pullover Hooded Sweatshirt is the final word on hoodies.

There is also a women’s option, though it comes in at a heftier price tag of $175.00. But as we always say here at A to Z, “you get what you pay for.” You’ll probably have it just about forever anyway, as Filson’s gear has a distinct reputation of lasting more than a generation.
